Mercury through the Signs

People love to talk about planetary heavyweights, but don’t let this magician escape your understanding: MERCURY! This article focuses on the sign of Mercury in your natal chart.

Mercury is the planet responsible for putting words to what the Sun perceives. It communicates our perception of reality It is language we use when we talk to ourselves; it’s the words we think and the words we speak.

Have you ever felt like you and the person you are talking to are speaking different languages? Have you ever felt like you couldn’t get on the same page with the person you’re talking to, no matter how hard you tried? On the other hand, have you ever experienced telepathy and the ability to communicate without words? Have you ever felt like you could complete their sentences effortlessly?

All of these experiences can be traced back to the symbolism of Mercury in your natal chart.

Mercury is the fastest moving planet and is never more than 28° from the Sun. Its phasal relationship to the Sun, its speed, and its sign each say something important about you and your communication style.

Mercury Through the Signs

Mercury in signs ruled by the Sun and Moon

Mercury in Leo is ruled by the Sun. This placement here can be brilliant and intellectual with the ability to communicate clearly and succinctly what one perceives. This communication style can be dogmatic and obstinate in communication, unable to pick up on nuances. Mercury in Leo speaks with authority and may dominate discussions believing that their way is the only way.

Mercury in Cancer is ruled by the Moon. Its mode and method of communication waxes and wanes. At times they can be talkative, others mute. These natives can be intense and forceful in their language if their emotions precipitate such a response. Because Cancer tends to take things from one extreme to another (just like the Moon’s light), Mercury here is dramatic, running hot then cold.

Mercury in Mercury Ruled Signs

Both Mercury in Gemini & in Virgo are concerned with the symbols that hold the space for the thing itself. Mercury in Virgo’s symbol can be number and image, Gemini’s word and mannerism, sound.

Mercury in Gemini is air. It can be a ‘say anything’ kind of communicator because they are detached from the meaning of the words they say. The epitome of “don’t shoot the messenger”, it’s another placement where nuance and subtlety can be lost. Remember, when a planet is in its own sign—like Mercury in Gemini and Virgo—it’s its own boss. That authority equals power and responsibility.

Mercury in Virgo is earth. Earth is concerned with what is tangiblee. Here, Mercury is its own boss. It’s concerned with both the technical and practical aspects of communicating. Mercury in Virgo can be quite literal. A messenger too, Mercury in Virgo is precise and seeks accuracy over “perfection.” It translates using symbols, bringing down to earth what is perceived.

Mercury in Venus Ruled Signs

Mercury in Taurus is ruled by the earthy Venus. Rather than speaking to be understood, Mercury in Taurus speaks to be accepted. It uses its faculty of communication in order to find social validation via race, class, gender, and sexuality. Mercury in Taurus often says what they feel people want to hear in a tone that will elicit a particular response, for good or ill.

Mercury in Libra is focused on using language as a tool of reason, one that unifies and finds consensus. Mercury rules all air signs (by triplicity/element) at night so it has some dignity (authority) here. Striving for consensus and an honest appraisal, Mercury in Libra brings detachment, seeking fairness, equally acknowledging the various ways to communicate. Communication is a function of connecting people and ideas.

This detachment can be problematic when an empathetic or personal approach is needed.

Mercury in Mars Ruled Signs

Mercury in Aries is fire. Fire is the will and the light of conscious awareness. Don’t sleep on Mercury in Aries as an intellectual who can speak with clarity and willfulness. think. Still their word cut, burn, explode. Words as an axe that chop right down to the essence. Distilling and delineating difference. Being the exaltation of the Sun, Aries Mercury brings unification of perception and word.

With Mercury in Scorpio language is used to conceal and protect rather than to reveal. It’s more about what isn’t said. Mars is always about separation and division, though not always in a negative way. But with Scorpio expressing the watery side of Mars there is this feeling that words are creating closeness, but they are really creating division, maintaining boundaries of separateness. Mercury in Scorpio uses language to guard. It doesn’t want to reveal what it perceives.

Mercury in Jupiter ruled signs

Debilitated (lacks authority) in both Sagittarius and Pisces, their ruler Jupiter is indifferent and somewhat hostile to Mercury’s agenda of using symbols to communicate what one perceives. Words often get in the way of what Mercury in Sagittarius and Mercury in Pisces really means,

Mercury in Sagittarius may have issues with hyperbole or saying what they really mean. Mercury here can get caught up on controlling how others interpret them leading them into paralysis, saying nothing at all. Words limit their ability to articulate their intention so they may speak in story or myth rather than succinct concise language.

Mercury in Pisces seeks to give word to the unspeakable. It’s language as a means to connecting to something bigger than the individual self. Pisces is the exaltation of Venus. With Mercury there it can be poetic and prone to soliloquy. Mercury in Pisces speaks in images. It communicates by creating pictures rather than quantifying specifics. Mercury in Pisces wants to say things perfectly rather than precisely. Perfectly as in articulating the meaning even if the words don’t literally translate.

Mercury in Saturn Ruled Signs

Saturn is the planet of death, loss, fear, anxiety. But it is also the planet of conceptual reality and reimagining what is.

Mercury in Capricorn is the earth side of that power. It uses language to express competency. Communicating methodically, efficiently, and concisely, Mercury in Capricorn uses words as a tool to establish order and impose structure.

Where Mercury in Capricorn uses language to manage the world and people around them, Mercury in Aquarius is the word as self-determination. Mercury in Aquarius uses words to conceptually reimagine the self and the world. Mercury here can be quite technically adept in writing, the sciences, and music.

Revelations: The Astrology of April 7, 2017 – April 15, 201

Important Dates

All transits are in sidereal. If you’re curious about your chart using the sidereal zodiac you can find a guide with instructions on plotting your sidereal chart here, and a post outlining some of the philosophical differences between tropical and sidereal here.

I’ve been saying that the week of April 9 is the turning point, but the astrology of Friday April 7 through Saturday April 15 are probably the most intense days of the year, second only to late August when the total solar eclipse in Leo occurs and early September when the eclipse degree is triggered. Think of this as act one. Here is a rundown:

April 7

Saturn Rx, 3 Sagittarius

Uranus enters Aries

Sun opposite Jupiter

April 9

Mercury stations retrograde, 10 Aries

April 11

Full Moon conjunct Jupiter, 27 Virgo

April 12

Mars enters Taurus

April 13

Aries Ingress, Sun conjunct Uranus

April 15

Venus stations direct at 2 Pisces

This 9 +/- period augurs a cyclical shift that sheds light on previously unclear circumstances so that power dynamics change. It’s an overlap of cycles beginning and cycles ending. One thing resolves and another thing surfaces to be addressed. April is extreme, but May provides respite. Read on for a detailed look at each of this astro events.

The Astrology of April 7, 2017 - April 15, 2017 - @PeoplesOracle

Saturn Retrograde at 3 Sagittarius, April 7

Saturn has spent the last 2 years in Scorpio. He entered Sagittarius for a brief 6 months stay on January 26, 2017. I’ve made observations on Saturn’s transit through Sagittarius. I want to use this space to talk about Saturn re-entering Scorpio which happens June 20, 2017 through October 26, 2017.

Saturn will spend 4 months back in Scorpio to wrap up unfinished business. Saturn is about power and authority. It’s about sovereignty over ourselves. In Scorpio, Saturn answers to Mars and highlights our volition; do we submit to authority figures willingly or are we coerced?

Saturn breeds either humility or hubris. It can also breed humiliation. That’s where we find ourselves with Saturn in Scorpio. Does the exercising of our will come from:

  • An understanding that our power is limited and we are always subject to someone or something?
  • A belief that we can strong arm our way to positions of power?
  • Or do we feel bereft of personal power and influence in our world?

These are the questions that we will be answering the 4 months between June and October. What is our relationships with our own power and the power of others? This is a theme that manifests in our individual lives, personal relationships, and collectively.

Sun in Pisces opposite Jupiter in Virgo, April 7

Oppositions are a fulfillment of a promise made at the conjunction. Look back to late September 2016 when the Sun and Jupiter had their annual conjunction at 9 Virgo. As the Sun progressed past Jupiter on to a 90° square (28 Sagittarius/Virgo mid January 2017) we met a crises point and opportunity for breakthrough. Let’s look at what this signifies.

The Sun is the mind, the intellect. It is perception and the light of illumination. Jupiter is synthesis, contextualizing all that is perceived, crafting a narrative, and setting a precedent for possibility. When they are conjunct in Virgo, they are subject to Mercury’s need to concretize perception and synthesis into language and symbols, equations and data. We get numbers, facts, figures, and statistics.

When the Sun squares Jupiter from Sagittarius, we get the first challenge to the data. Perspective is provided and an alternative narrative is developed.

Now that we are reaching the culmination, the opposition of the Sun and Jupiter, it’s time for a revelation. The Sun shines light on Jupiter from Pisces. Read more on this opposition below, under the Full Moon in Virgo.

Uranus in Aries, April 7

The significations of Uranus can be gleaned from Mars and Mercury alone. But there is something to be said for the validity of Uranus acting like a fixed star, as I have personally experienced the herky-jerky tribulations of a Uranus transit.

Uranus entered sidereal Pisces for the first time back in 2009, but for good in 2010. This was a feature of the Uranus-Pluto square that has dominated the astrological landscape for the past several years (since 2012). Uranus entered Aries briefly last summer (2016) only just into the 1st degree. This time, Uranus is an Aries for good until 2024/2025.

While Uranus brings disruption and chaos, in Pisces that disruption can be diffuse and misdirected, revealing no clear aim. Uranus in Pisces is like lightning striking water. The electrical current of the bolt scatters over the surface of the water in all directions. Anyone swimming, or ships near the location of the strike, will most certainly be shocked, burned, or killed. But the depths of the water is left untouched.

This is not to say that the many crises precipitated during Uranus in Pisces, especially its extended square with Pluto, didn’t change anything beneath the surface. It’s that Uranus in Pisces conceals the depths of Uranus’ change, it deceives the scope of the effect of the change. But Uranus in Aries comes to make it clear.

Aries doesn’t have the laser like precision of Scorpio. It’s more like an axe that hacks away till the tree comes down. But the tree will come down.

Uranus was last in Aries beginning in 1933. Anyone with just a cursory knowledge of history knows that year changed the trajectory of global politics and economics. I did an astrological comparison of Aries ingress charts from 1933 and 2017 in this post. And there you’ll learn that the Sun and Uranus are conjunct at 0 Aries in the Aries Ingress chart once every 84 years. So Uranus entering Aries is a BIG DEAL.

The next 7 years is a time where the change becomes permanent. Things are not going back to how they were. The Aries house in your chart is getting an old fashioned shakedown. It may be completely destroyed, or at least unrecognizable, after Uranus is finished.

Most of you reading this have never experienced Uranus in Aries, so this is unprecedented in many ways. I’ll be sharing more about ways this may manifest in our individual charts in the near future.

Mercury retrograde, April 9

Mercury in Aries is ruled by Mars. In Pisces, Mercury was a cauldron of symbolism, tasked with finding language for the unspeakable, the unspoken. Now, in Aries, the messenger becomes a bugle, a horn with a battle cry. Mercury in Aries is subject to the drive for self protection, and the will to survive. Words are weapons declaring war, meant to decapitate and permanently separate.

Mercury is following the path that Mars cleared just a few weeks ago. Mars was the bulldozer clearing the way. Mercury in Aries will reveal the messages on what has been cleared.

This is a particularly long retrograde. This one is almost 4 weeks, and it covers the first 10 degrees of Aries. The retrograde station is at 10 Aries on April 9, and the direct station is at 0 degrees on May 4, and that is conjunct Uranus. This is truly a time of dramatic change that upsets the status quo, begs for innovation, and requires constant adjustment.

The Shadow period began March 26, so you may be able to get an idea of what this period will feature for you as March ends and April begins. But we’re dealing with a volatile sign, and two unstable planets (Mercury and Uranus). If you have any angles in early Aries, or prominent planets there, then this may be a particularly busy time for you. And it’s only just beginning with Uranus coming.

It may be helpful to think back to May of 2016 which was the last Aries Mercury Rx. Thinking back to April 28 through May 22 of that year can provide clues to the topics and areas of life that may be up for review this year.

Mercury retrograde is a time to go back and review unfinished business, revisit past situations, and redo things that need to be adjusted. This period is also good for restarting things that didn’t work out the first time, or undoing things that turned out not to be a good thing.

Full Moon at 27 Virgo, conjunct Jupiter, April 11

Lunations are very important because the Moon’s phases are one of the larger cycles that often acts as a trigger for events. We can look at this Full Moon on April 11 as the bright light that illuminates everything else that’s going on. Particularly, the Moon’s conjunction with Jupiter is a trigger for other astro events that have been happening over the past 9 months.

All of the personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) have made multiple aspects with Jupiter in Virgo. Jupiter in Virgo is a hardline logician. Not reason, but equations that provide measurable data.

Planets from Gemini squaring Jupiter in Virgo are spin masters, taking the hard data and spinning it like a magician (enter Donald J. Trump who has natal Mercury in Gemini square Jupiter in Virgo).

Planets in Pisces opposing Jupiter in Virgo work hard to contextualize that data into a larger scheme. We’ve watched a kind of two-way distillation process during sidereal Pisces season. So much information and varied data has been raining on our heads for months, but now it finally seems like we can understand exactly what is all of this data implies. Or maybe it means nothing at all?

Planets in Sagittarius squaring Jupiter in Virgo speak of  a partial breakdown. The zeal of dogma and the factuality of data squaring off head on. We’ve seen the zeal of both congress and the president receive pushback because the actual data and personal experiences of folks block bureaucracy

We’re going to see this square off politically as revelations RE Devin Nunes, the Trump family, Jeff Sessions, et al makes serious waves.

One thing that is particularly significant is that this Full Moon in Virgo is ruled by a freshly retrograde Mercury. That means that Mercury is still moving very slowly and is apt to cause delays, reversals, and revisiting matters in your Virgo house and Gemini house.

This particular story has been building since last August, so it may be beneficial to do a personal recap of what was going on in your life at that time.

Mars in Taurus, April 12

The transit from Aries to Taurus is a big one for Mars. He goes from his domicile (home) to far away from home, his detriment. Mars will be in sidereal Taurus from April 12 until May 26.

Mars in Aries is the infantry soldier, the tree logger, and the knife sharpener. Mars answers to himself there. He doesn’t ask for permission. And he doesn’t apologize, he just goes for it.

But in Taurus Mars must answer to Venus who isn’t sympathetic to his needs. Mars is divisive, combative, and conflicting. Venus is unifying, assuaging, and harmonizing. You see the challenge here? When Mars has to get permission from Venus in order to act, Mars has to shed his usual demeanor and take on a more conciliatory approach.

Taurus is about decorum, beauty, sensuality. As a Venus ruled sign it puts Mars in a bind. Mars wants to fight. It wants to cut and separate. Divide and deconstruct. So how do you fight with decorum? Cut with beauty? Divide sensually? It’s a conundrum. You become passive aggressive.

Mars in Taurus is the nice-nasty friend who slides in digs with a smile. It’s “bless your heart”, when they really mean to curse you. It’s fighting while maintaining a connection. And the ultimate in latent aggression. Mars in Taurus isn’t a pushover, just someone who wants to maintain decorum in the midst of the fight.

Aries Ingress, April 13

I’ve already written extensively about the Aries Ingress. Instead of outlining things here I will provide a list of links. These are links to a post on my blog and threads on Twitter where I talking more about what to expect in the USA regarding the Ingress. If you are not clear on what ia ingress is, read the first link.

Venus Stationary Direct at 2 Pisces, April 15

Venus has been retrograde since March 4. That day she sat still at 19 Pisces and appeared to begin travelling backwards through the zodiac. By April 15, she will have landed at 2 Pisces and once again sit still, but this time appear to move forward. She’ll be slow for awhile, though.

Planets moving slower than their normal speed and direction demand our attention. With regard to Venus it’s a time for reexamination of our desires;

  • Do you really want what you said you wanted?
  • Will you maintain your commitment?
  • Or is it time for a renegotiation?
  • Do you need more time to make a decision?

This can apply to anything that requires a consensus or agreement between people. It can apply to our physical desires as well. The essence of it all is choice. Venus Rx is a time to consider (which means to examine the stars) why we have chosen or choose as we do. What motivates your choices?

As Venus slows between April 7 and April 15, it is a time to reckon up. We must make an account for how we’ve chosen to proceed in certain areas of our lives.

The direct station occurs at a time when so much else is happening in the sky that it may be hard to know what’s what. But the end of Venus’ retrograde travel is like the icing on the cake to a week of unrelenting activity.

Mercury’s retrograde station and Venus’ direct station overlap and can make for quite a confusing time. Just when you feel like you’ve gotten your sea legs with Venus, Mercury comes along to shake things up. If the work of Venus has mostly been internal for you, Mercury lays the cards on the table.

Are you ready!

Beyonce: Mercury, Symbolism, and Messages from the Divine

Following Beyonce’s immaculately divine performance on the 2017 Grammy Awards Show last night, I felt like I had witnessed a ritual of divine worship. I was entranced. The symbolism was POWERFUL!

Beyonce as the Black Madonna - @PeoplesOracle

Between Lemonade and her embodiment of the Goddess in her pregnancy photos (scroll down for the images) it has become clear to me that she has nurtured a deep connection with the Divine. The symbolism of Oshun, and now the Black Madonna, dominates the imagery and symbolism of her artistry and self expression.

It’s no coincidence the Beyonce uses such strong and storied spiritual symbolism in her art. Mercury is a fascinating planet, rich in mythological and astrological symbolism that dominates her natal chart.

Mercury in Astrology

Last week on Twitter, I spent time talking about how underrated Mercury is in astrology. It’s not feared like Saturn, adored like Venus, or venerated like the Moon and the Sun.

Mercury is not the mind itself. The Sun is the mind. The mind (SUN) cannot be directly perceived. It must be processed and brought down to earth. Mercury is the messenger that delivers the perception of the Sun. And if the Sun is pure perception, Mercury (as well as the Moon, for other observable reasons) filters and translates that perception.

Without Mercury there is no language, no symbols nor their translation. There is no magic—no deliverance of the Will of the Divine to humans.

Mercury, Ruler of Virgo the Virgin

Virgo is the 6th sign of the zodiac. It is a mutable/common earth sign ruled by the planet Mercury. Virgo translated from Latin means virgin. There is the chaste virgin who is sexually inexperienced. And there is the virgin who is unmarried, owned by no man.

Ultimately, in the west, the virgin is symbolised most visibly by Mary, mother of Jesus, who is said to have divinely conceived her son. Her depictions and iconography are found far and wide from far eastern Europe in Lithuania where she is Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn, to Cuba where she is Our Lady of Regla.

In Orthodox Christianity Mary is seen as mediator—as Mediatrix in the Roman Catholic church—literally bringing heaven down to Earth through her womb and the birth of the Christ. And Mercury, syncretized with the Greek Hermes, was the messenger of the gods and was often tasked with bringing messages from on high down to humans.

These two symbols are syncretized into Virgo, the Virgin, ruled by the planet Mercury.

Beyonce & Spiritual Symbolism

Sunrise Birth Chart for Beyonce - @PeoplesOracle
I’m using a sunrise chart because there is no verified or reliable birth time available. Some use a noon chart when there is no birth time, but this works fine for the purpose it’s serving.

I present to you a sidereal sunrise birth chart for Beyonce.

In Beyonce’s birth chart, we can see the importance and dominance of Mercury as manifested in 4 strongly placed planets in Virgo. Mercury rules the bunch and is in his own sign. Venus is there in the sign of her fall, Jupiter in the sign of his detriment, and Saturn is peregrine. Jupiter is how we view the world based on our experiences. Saturn is our teacher, enforcer of limitations, and the one that rewards our persistence over time.

As I mentioned before, Mercury is not just communication or someone who sends messages. The symbolism and stories of Mercury/Hermes, though surely not original, has been syncretized with or represented in almost every world religion. He translates divine messages using oracles like astrology, tarot, runes, shells, bones, and language like scripture, sutras, art, symbols, poetry, etc.

Mercury also escorted the souls of the deceased to the after life. He had dominion over the transitions of life. Embodied in Virgo, Mercury brings us the birth of the Sun by ushering us through Libra, Sagittarius, and then Capricorn where the Sun ultimately dies and rises on the 3rd day at the winter solstice.

Venus is the most interesting to me. What does it mean for Venus to have to answer to Mercury? On a mundane level, it means that Venus is subservient to the need for precision and accuracy. Mercury is calculative, weighing and measuring is used as means for accuracy. So, Venus the planet of pleasure and love, but also art and creativity, is expressed with forethought, planning, and with the precision of calculations.

If you’ve seen Beyonce perform or talk about her craft then you’ve witnessed accuracy and precision in every aspect of her presentation. From the amount of time it took her to walk through length of the runway after a song on her Formation World Tour, to the foresight necessary to execute legendary song releases; there is calculation, precision, and accuracy that is unmatched by any of her contemporaries.

On a symbolic level, Venus in Virgo, answering to Mercury, manifests as a woman who is devoted to craftsmanship as an expression of her divine calling. Beyonce has evolved into the symbol of the self-possessed woman. And her devotion to her craft has culminated in her channeling and expressing her experiences through divine symbols. It is a testament to the strong reflection Mercury makes of her life.

In the same way that Mary, the Virgin of mythological lore, was impregnated and thrust into a special relationship with the divine, Beyonce has shown us and told us that pregnancy and motherhood is the thing that has illuminated purpose in her life. And in her celebration of fecundity, pregnancy, and motherhood, she has opened another door on her path of divine exploration and communication.

The iconography of Oshun, The Black Madonna, and Yemaya as seen in Lemonade, her recent pregnancy photoshoot, and her grammy performance is no accident. One doesn’t happen upon those symbols and that knowledge. One is drawn to them, compelled to know what they are, and called to study their meaning and relevance in one’s life.

I can speculate about how Beyonce knows about this stuff, but I don’t think it matters. What’s clear is that her art intentionally invokes and conjures powerful divine expressions of goddesses, orisha, and saints that clearly resonate with her and her spiritual journey. Her artistry embodies the symbolism of Mercury in a way that breathes depth into the ways in which one can understanding that planet.

Mercury enters Capricorn – February 3, 2017

Mercury enters Capricorn Friday, February 3, 2017 on the same day as the First Quarter Moon in Aries and the collective conversation changes tempo. Mercury will leave the domain of Jupiter, the sign of its detriment, and enter Capricorn, the domain of Saturn.

All sign changes and transits listed in sidereal.

Mercury in Capricorn: February 3 – February 22

Mercury in Capricorn 2/3/2017 - by @PeoplesOracle
Mercury Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter in Virgo, had the news cycle moving rapidly. In true mercurial fashion, the onslaught of stories and the scattered pace of events made it difficult to know what was important.

Mercury gathers and organizes information, calculates, and works with the hands. In Sagittarius Mercury answers to Jupiter and is forced to fit the information into a larger narrative and understand the deeper implications. Sagittarius often runs hot and cold with passion, zeal than apathy. Mystery attracts Sagittarius and sets them on a path of discovery, seeking. But with so much information passing through it’s difficult to discern the importance of every message and story and to know just what one has found.

Mercury becomes more calculated and grounded in Capricorn. Rather than being overwhelmed with information and trying to piece it together, Mercury is systematic and methodical here. The messenger leaves behind the task of synthesizing info and begins to organize it in a hierarchy.

Mercury in Capricorn is about method and praxis. Structures of thought, organized communication, and calculative interpretation of information provide a means to process and translate our perceptions. Here, Hermes answers to Saturn which is newly in Sagittarius.

Mercury Answers to Saturn

Saturn in Sagittarius, so far, has meant a collective means to establishing order and structure with immigration and religion in the US. Ruled by a debilitated Jupiter in Virgo, power structures and government actors have been shortsighted. Claiming that only 109 people were directly affected, it shows the weakness of Jupiter in Virgo.

In that sign, Jupiter uses numbers, data, facts, and calculations to synthesize info and see the bigger picture. But it lacks good judgement, empathy, and truth. The implications for a singular circumstance inevitably has a much larger impact that 109 inconvenienced people could ever show.

Jupiter’s debilitation in Virgo makes it difficult for us to see how current events and our present circumstances affect us in the long term, the big picture. In times like these, the fragments don’t always reflect the whole. Or maybe we can’t perceive the whole as accurately as we think we can.

Mercury and Jupiter will be in a trine relationship with one way reception (Mercury receives Jupiter being in the sign of its domicile). The trine shows a willingness and opportunity to work together. And the reception means Mercury will accept whatever Jupiter offers. Jupiter is offering a fragmentation of the truth and Mercury will take those numbers, those facts and figures and put them in hierarchical order. Perhaps the most pressings themes will emerge as what we need to focus on what’s.
